Prepare Your House for the Coming Winter

Drain Your Rain Barrels

Autumn is here and it’s the perfect time to utilize all the collected water before is freezes. Put it to good use in house plants, garden, and grass.

Clean Rain Gutters

Clean gutters prevents build-up of ice on your roof. This also prevents water from freezing under your shingles.

Trim Trees

Walk around the house and locate your power lines, check to see if your tree limbs are growing too close for comfort. Also look for weak branches over hanging the driveway, prevent them from falling onto your vehicle with a smart trim.

Check Your Snow Blower and Stock Up

If you live the fun snowy areas, give your snow blower a start before that dreaded morning when you have to get out there and clear your driveway. Fill it with, keep back-up gas in the garage. Make sure all your shovels are in working condition and a good stock of salt for your steps and walk ways.

Check for Air Leaks

Walk around your home on a cold night and, using bare hands and feet or a feather duster (ruffles in the breeze), feel around your doors, windows, lights, and switch plates for cold air.

If you find any leaks, you need to either add insulation to these areas, or seal them using weather-stripping, caulk, or spray foam. Energy Star estimates that a well sealed home can save as much as 20% on your heating and cooling costs.

Check Your Furnace Filter

Check the filter – it may need to be replaced. If your furnace filter looks dirty, then definitely replace it. During the winter months, change your furnace filter every 4 to 6 weeks. This keeps your furnace running efficiently. If you have one of those old thermostats, where it’s required to dial it like an ancient phone, it’s time to upgrade to a programmable or learning thermostat.

Insulate Pipes and Hot Water Heater

Insulated water pipes is crucial, it can raise the temperature of your water 2 to 4 degrees.

Add Insulation

Adding or replacing the insulation in your attic. It’s simple if you are a DIYer, or have it done by a professional. Some states still have a rebate for upgrading your insulation, great deal! Find out here. http://energy.gov/savings
