The Gift of Giving
During the Holidays, we often focus on giving and receiving gifts. But one the most rewarding gifts we could give ourselves and our community is the gift of our time and talents. There are innumerable opportunities throughout the year, particularly during the Holiday Season, for volunteering.
You may be asking yourself how you're going to find time with your busy schedule. But if you consider the benefits and give it a try, you may wonder why you haven't volunteered before. Surprisingly, studies have shown that it can reduce stress, combat depression, and increase your self confidence.
Many people volunteer in order to make time for hobbies outside of work as well. For instance, if you have a desk job and long for the outdoors, you might consider walking dogs for an animal shelter, help at a kids camp, or plant a community garden.
The key to having a successful experience is to find the right volunteer position. Look for something you enjoy and are capable of doing. The types of needs in your community are limitless. Many volunteer jobs also offer training. So don't be afraid to expand your horizons and gain new experiences helping others.
