The Home of the Future
At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas (the place where tech and innovation companies go to reveal their newest gadgets and solutions to problems you may not even know you had) there was no shortage of high-tech home gadgets to make your life easier — or at least more interesting. According to the Consumer Technology Association, about 15% of households now contain some smart home devices.
Did you know you needed an automated floss dispenser? A solid-gold hand-made coffeemaker? A Bluetooth toaster (and no, it doesn’t self-insert the bread, sorry)? A hairbrush with a built-in microphone and sensors? Ok, maybe those things aren’t at the top of your list. Here, then, are a few innovations we think may start showing up in smart homes this year:
Use the app to make sure you turned the burner off. You can also set a timer to turn it off and ensure your pot doesn’t boil over.
Sure, you can buy a memory-foam mattress bed on TV. But why settle for a plain old bed when you can get one that has a foot warmer? It adjusts when you change position and it can track your sleeping patterns and work with health and fitness apps you already use. Under-frame lights automatically switch on when you get up at 3am for a snack. A similar bed featuring air spring cells that soften or harden as you move around, air flow to regulate your temperature, a vibrating massage, and even anti-snoring technology, is also a hot item for the home.
Worried about the water bill? Concerned about drought? Try a shower head fitted with LEDs that change color to indicate how much water you’ve used. Assign a color to quantities you choose, and use the app to see how much water you save. Or try a new shower controller that lets you fiddle with the water temperature through an app so you don’t have to just stand there next to the shower, checking the water every minute to see if it’s warm enough. That is, if you have about $1,160 to spend on a shower temperature regulator.
Do you hate doing laundry? Do most people hate doing laundry? We think the answer is yes, and that anything that makes cleaning clothes easier deserves a second look. Enter the latest technology in laundry performance. It boasts a front-load and a top-load on each machine, meaning you can get two loads done at the same time! Put your regular-size loads in the bigger front-loading machine and smaller, more delicate items in the top-loader. Water is kept separate in the washer and the dryer can be set to two different temperatures. All controllable by an app, of course.
There are also lots of innovations to smart security systems, smart locks, smart lighting, smart alarm clocks, smart key replacements, smart home network protectors ... and hubs to control them all. Look for the world of the future coming to a store near you in the near … future!
